A traditional castle and its world-famous bar

This is where life was full of life in the 20th century!

As early as the 1950s, a cocktail bar was set up in the rooms of today's Benediktus, formerly Schlossbräu, for the American occupation soldiers housed in the castle. Soon word spreads about the bar as a place for good humour and exclusive drinks, and so the bar remains even after the soldiers have left. Over the next few years, the Countess develops the bar into a fixture for lovers of upscale gastronomy.

Greta Garbo, Ives St Laurent, but also Herbert von Karajan, Niki Lauda or Jochen Rindt regularly drop in for one or more glasses. The tranquil, rural Mondsee has been a meeting place for sophisticated high society since the 1950s.

And as always, life here, in the castle, revolves around a woman: Micheline Almeida is her name, the wealthy daughter of the former lord of the castle and, as a countess, accustomed to the refined life. And so the bar she runs is the hotspot, serving oysters and champagne, but also Russian caviar in abundance.

Besonders während der Salzburger Festspiele gehen hier die Lichter nur selten aus. Und anders als heute lassen es Superreiche wie Bohemiens so richtig krachen: man zeigt, was man sich leisten kann.

1985 wird das Schloss verkauft, die Gräfin und ihr Mann ziehen endlich ganz in den Sunshine-State im Süden der USA. Die Castello Bar & Lounge bleibt Prominenten wie Mondseern noch drei weitere Jahre erhalten, bis sie ihre Pforten schließt. Erst 2020 erwacht der Treffpunkt für alle, die das Leben genießen wollen, wieder aus seinem langen Winterschlaf.

Geschichten und Gerüchte, Lieben und Skandale – jede Menge Erinnerungen also schweben durch die historischen Räume, in denen einst auch der Mondseer Schachtelkäse zu Ruhm gekommen ist. Hören Sie ruhig genauer hin, während Sie sich einen Drink genehmigen und einen kleinen Happen dazu genießen: Wie von weitem klingt es bis heute nach, das Klirren der Gläser, das fröhliche Geplapper. Die gute alte, die bunte, wilde und verrückte Zeit.
